An Attapulgus man was stabbed to death at approximately 12 a.m. Sunday, according to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office.

Trevis Ramonte Clemons, 31, of 126 Fluitt Road, Attapulgus, died at Memorial Hospital soon after the stabbing took place.

Clemons, better known to his friends as Kente Campbell, was inside a private building located at 4434 Georgia 309 South that is used as a pool room and small kitchen, said Investigator Chip Nix of the Sheriff’s Office.

The building was owned by Clemons’ uncle, Lawrence Sapp of Attapulgus, whose mother was buried on Saturday, Nix said. Sapp’s relatives had gathered at the building when the stabbing occurred.

A man later identified by witnesses as Roderick Elliot Smith, 38, entered the building and confronted Clemons. Smith then allegedly took a knife from the kitchen area and used it to stab Clemons, according to Nix.

Deputy Charlie Emanuel Jr. responded to the scene and observed a man administering CPR to Clemons. While first responders took over CPR, deputies secured the scene and gathered witness statements.

Witnesses stated the suspect, Smith, then walked nearby to his home at 4437 Georgia 309 South, changed clothes and fled on foot. Decatur County investigators, including Nix, began looking for him in the surrounding neighborhood. Nix spotted Smith in a field off Stephens Jenkins Road. Deputies pursued Smith about 150 yards before the suspect fell and was taken into custody.

Nix said that while deputies have talked to numerous possible witnesses to the stabbing, they would still like to talk with anyone who has any first-person information about the incident.
