Motorists, keep your eyes open

City officials want motorists to realize that the intersection at Clay and Water Streets is now a four-way stop. All traffic from all directions must now pause at the stop sign, while before only traffic from Clay Street had to stop.
Also, motorists have no doubt noticed the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) work crews that have been present on State Route 97. According to a press release from the DOT, there will be additional pavement widening taking place on that highway next week, and drivers should be aware that the road may narrow to one lane at times.
Studies have repeatedly shown that a majority of major accidents occur within 5 miles of a driver’s home. There are reasons for this. Familiarity with a route breeds complacency, and it is easy to lose focus on roads that have been traveled so many times before. City officials have noted that it is difficult for drivers to change their habits, which is why it is important to notice the new stop at the intersection of Clay and Water.
In addition, the warmer months are beginning to attract more walkers and cyclists outside, so it is even more important for drivers to slow down and pay attention. There’s no need to rush.
