Going forth

Spring is a time for graduations—A time when we celebrate the end of high school or college days—the end of a phase in our lives as students.

While we happily celebrate what has gone before and the accomplishments that have been made, there may be a temptation by some to view graduation as the end of it all.

We need to remember what nature teaches us—that spring is a time of new growth and new beginnings.

Some graduates will go on to seek higher education, some will join the military, some will enter the workforce, while an unfortunate few may suddenly find themselves at loose ends, wondering what to do next.

Bainbridge College President Richard Carvajal said it best in his speech to the BC graduates Thursday night.

“Until now, your job has been to be the best student you could be. Perhaps you also worked full or part-time to make ends meet. But when your days as a student are behind you, I believe that you must be willing to use the newfound time you will have to invest in your community.”

Your “community” may change, but wherever you go, whatever you do, take the skills and preparation you have learned and put them to their best use. Look for opportunities to get involved and make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others.

This may be the end of your student days, but it is the beginning of the rest of your life. Make the most of it.
