Bainbridge College President Dr. Richard Carvajal said the late Joyce Robinson was a “friend of education.” Now, countless BC students will be reminded of Robinson’s legacy.

On Friday, before a crowd of family and community leaders, Carvajal officially dedicated the lobby of the BC Shotwell Education Center as the “Joyce S. Robinson Lobby.” The Shotwell Education Center houses the college’s cosmetology program, continuing education program and adult education program.

“May all who forever enter here remember the dedication to her family and community that Joyce displayed during her amazing 77 years,” Carvajal said.

Robinson, who died April 26, 2012, earned her bachelor of science degree from the University of Georgia, and taught first grade for several years before starting a kindergarten program at Morningside Baptist Church. She taught there for more than 35 years.

She was also a volunteer for more than 20 years with Hospice of Southwest Georgia, and received the Bainbridge-Decatur County Woman of the Year Award in 2008.

“Her love for others, and her eagerness to help those who needed help the most, made her someone who was very special to my family and families throughout southwest Georgia,” Carvajal said.

Among those in attendance were Robinson’s husband of 53 years, Dewey Robinson.

“She realized how important it was that children get an education so that they could have a better life, in order that we might have a better life and a better country in which to live,” he said.

“Joyce was a very special person to me, and to my family, and to many of you. She was passionate about her church, about her God and about her family and people in general.”
