The BHS varsity and junior varsity softball teams split their first home games of the season on Monday afternoon against Seminole County.

The varsity Lady Cats, who won two games in a weekend invitational, played their first home game of the season on Monday afternoon against the Seminole County Lady Indians of Class A.

Brooke Bates pitched a complete game win for the Lady Cats, notching five strikeouts.

The Lady Cats scored first, in the bottom of the second. Caitlyn Dunlap singled and moved to third on a double by Magan Vaughn. A wild pitch scored Dunlap, who slid into home, beating the catcher’s toss back to the pitcher.

The Lady Indians stranded two runners in the second inning and two more in the third, as Bates pitched a shutout through the first five innings.

The Lady Cats scored two more in the fifth. Laura Griner singled and scored on a triple by Bates.

The Lady Indians scored all of their runs in the top of the sixth. A single and a hit batsman put two on the bases, then an error loaded the bases. A walk scored the final run, before the Lady Cats were able to close out the game.

 

Junior varsity

In the junior varsity contest, BHS lost 9-5 to Seminole County in the JV Lady Cats’ first game of the season.

The JV Lady Cats started off strong, scoring two runs in the first. Taylor Swanner reached third on an outfielder’s error.

Haley Thompson walked and then an error by the Lady Indians’ catcher scored Swanner and moved Thompson to third. Thompson then scored on a wild pitch.

Victoria Sprenkle hit a triple, but was later thrown out trying to come home.

The Lady Indians struck for three runs in top of the second, after Sprenkle walked the first three batters. A succession of plays, including a stolen base, an error and two wild pitches, brought three Lady Indians around to score.

In BHS’ second inning, Derrical Williams walked and then proceeded to steal second and third bases, but was left stranded.

Swanner, who started the game at shortstop, relieved Sprinkle from the third inning on.

More errors and wild pitches by the Lady Cats resulted in Seminole County scoring four more in the third and two in the fourth.
