Softball teams eager to play after rainouts

Coach Amy Thomas said her Bainbridge High School Lady Bearcats softball teams are anxious to play again, after having multiple games rained out within the past week.
Games which had to be cancelled or postponed included JV and varsity games against Crisp County last Wednesday, a varsity game against Turner County last Thursday and a JV tournament scheduled for this past weekend in Lee County. It was even raining Tuesday afternoon as the teams prepared to practice.
“With school starting, it’s always tough to get the girls back into the swing of things, and the weather hasn’t helped,” Coach Thomas said. “Some of the girls have played over the summer on travel teams, but not necessarily on each other’s team, so we’re still getting some experience playing together as one team.”
Although the BHS varsity softball team has a 3-1 record, including a 4-3 win over rival Seminole County, all of the games have been against teams not in the same region or even the same state classification. That changes this week.
After both JV and varsity travel to Cordele on Wednesday to play Crisp County, the varsity returns home to host region opponent Harris County on Friday evening.
“I wish we could have a little more practice, but we’ll do our best,” Coach Thomas said. “I’ve enjoyed seeing the seniors come together as a team and all of the girls are eager to represent their school well this season.”
“I think we’re going to see a lot of improvement over the next two weeks, we’ve played some close games and we’ve won them.”
Coach Thomas said baserunning has been one of the team’s strengths so far, and in fact, several Lady Bearcats have stretched what should have been just singles into multi-base hits, according to assistant coach Dennis Cato.
Things Thomas said her varsity team can improve upon are not leaving runners on base and making fewer defensive errors.
Friday’s varsity game against Harris County will be at 5 p.m. at the Bearcat Diamonds.
