The Bainbridge High School Lady Bearcats’ varsity softball team defeated their local rival, the Cairo High School Lady Syrupmakers, by a score of 5-1 on Monday in Cairo.

Maegan Harrison led the Lady Bearcats’ offense with two extra-base hits. Harrison had an RBI single in the first inning and doubled in each of the third and fourth innings.

Lady Bearcat Anna Barber also hit a solo home run in the top of the first. With her RBI on Monday, she now has six RBIs on the season and is hitting for a .500 average.

The Lady Bearcats tacked on two runs in the third. An error scored Harrison, then Lindsey Griner doubled to score Barber.

Junior starting pitcher Brooke Bates had an excellent outing on the mound, striking out eight Lady Syrupmakers in a complete game win. Bates only allowed one earned run on six hits and four walks in seven innings.

Cairo’s lone run came in the seventh inning, on an RBI single.

With the win, the varsity Bearcats record improves to four wins, two losses.

 

JV Lady Cats tie

The Bainbridge High junior varsity softball tied the Cairo JV squad 7-7 on Monday.

Freshman Taylor Swanner led the JV Lady Bearcats’ offense, going 3 for 4 at the plate, driving in one run and scoring another herself. Swanner singled in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Cairo’s JV took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first and another in the second.

The Lady Bearcats got on the board with one run in the top of the fourth, then took the lead by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth. They tacked on one more run in the sixth.

The Lady Syrupmakers came back with two runs in the bottom of both the fifth and sixth innings, to tie the ball game.

Cairo’s runs in the sixth inning came on a passed ball and an error.

Also playing well for BHS were Haley Thompson, who went 2-4 and scored two runs, and Tori Sprenkle, who had a two-RBI single and scored a run herself.

Chamara Johnson also had a two-RBI single for the Lady ‘Cats, while Tyaisha Gant had a double, scored two runs and had two stolen bases, including stealing home plate to score.

Swanner pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. She struck out six batters.

Swanner and Thompson are both hitting for a .500 average early in the season.
