Mr. Robert L. “Red” Shoemaker, 78, of Charlotte, N.C. passed away December 27, 2013, at his home.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at Whigham United Methodist Church with Rev. Marsha Emery officiating. The graveside service will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at Ivey Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Whigham Methodist Church, P.O. Box 4, Whigham,
GA 39897, or to the American Legion, Post 287, c/o Mr. Virgil Torrence, 245 McLean Rd., Newell, NC 28213.
Mr. Shoemaker, the son of the late J.T. Shoemaker and Ruthell Kelley Shoemaker, was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Bainbridge, Ga., and was raised in Whigham. He was a graduate of Whigham High School, Class of 1953. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving 20 years before retiring.
He then had a successful career with Ohmeda (Ohio Medical Products), retiring after 22 years. He was a member of Whigham United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #287.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shoemaker was preceded in death by his sister, Erlene Shoemaker.
Survivors include his son, Robert Michael “Mike” Shoemaker of Davie, Fla.; his daughter, Deborah S. “Debbie” Knight of Summerville, S.C.; his brother, J.D. Shoemaker of Bainbridge; his five grandchildren, Michael Paul Shoemaker, Jeffrey Tyler Shoemaker, Jason Bagley, Jacob Bagley, and Amber Miles; his
four great-grandchildren; and his two nephews.
A memorial service for Mr. Shoemaker will be held in Charlotte, NC at a later date. Ivey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
