A thief’s job was made easy Sunday when he allegedly stole a car from the Walmart parking lot at 2:30 a.m.
The car’s driver left the vehicle running and doors unlocked while she ran inside for a quick purchase. When she walked back out, the car was gone.
Bainbridge Public Safety officer Chris Avery responded to the call at 2:37 a.m. The driver told Avery the stolen vehicle’s year, make and model, but could not remember the tag number according to the incident report.
Walmart video surveillance footage showed a black male riding a bicycle to the store’s entrance and stepping inside for a moment. He then exited quickly, got inside the car and drove it away.
A “be on the lookout” alert was issued and the offender was spotted and chased by Cairo Police Department officer Richard Wade. The offender stopped in Thomasville on the west bypass and was taken into custody and placed in the Grady County Jail.
Bainbridge Public Safety Captain Mark Esquivel encouraged residents to turn their vehicles off whenever they leave them.
“And make sure they’re locked,” he said.
