Local 6-to-12-year old youngsters enjoyed learning the fundamentals of soccer during a Monday through Wednesday camp at Centennial Field.
Part of Tuesday’s camp session was held in the Elcan-King Elementary School gymnasium because of rain, but campers went right back out on the field when the rain stopped.
Former Bainbridge High School Bearcats head soccer coach Jamie Ard directed the camp. Current BHS Lady Cats head soccer coach Chip Ariail assisted him.
Ard and Ariail taught the youngsters the basic fundamentals of the game. Those fundamentals included footwork, first touch, passing, trapping, heading, shooting and defense. They also were schooled in teamwork and soccer knowledge.
Campers also participated in a variety of technique drills and games and their play impressed their instructors,
“During drills and games, the campers showed enthusiasm and worked hard,” Ard said.
Ariail said he was pleased with the campers’ devotion to becoming better soccer players.
“They were focused on becoming better players despite the summer heat,” added Ariail. With the World Cup going on now in Brazil, soccer is really in the forefront. We are all rooting for the United States team.”
