Bearcat baseball team progresses through summer schedule

The Bainbridge High School Bearcats summer league baseball team dropped a pair of close decisions to the Dothan High School Tigers and Cairo High School Syrumakers summer league teams 2-1 and 8-6 Tuesday at the Bearcat Diamond.
They bounced back Thursday to split a pair of games with the Thomas County Central High School Yellow Jackets They won the opener 6-3 and dropped the nightcap 5-2.
In the opener The Tigers took a 2-0 lead with single runs in top of the third and top of the fourth innings. A pair of singles, a sacrifice and a fielder’s choice produced the third inning run. A single a stolen base and a pair of fielder’s choices got the fourth inning run across.
The Bearcats run came on a long home run over the left field wall by third baseman Blake Merchant in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the second game against the Syrupmakers, the Bearcats made a late comeback that fell just short. Catcher Noah Bryant’s two run double to left center in the top of the sixth gave them a brief 5-4 lead.
The Syrupmakers came back with one in the bottom of the sixth to pull even 5-5. The Bearcats added another run in the top of the fifth to go up 6-5. The Syrupmakers then rallied for three in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.
The big blow in the Bearcats first game victor over Central on Thursday was a three run triple by catcher Will Kelley in the bottom of the fourth inning that but them up 5-2. The winning pitcher was left hander Nick Barber.
After falling behind 1-0 early to Central in Thursday’s opener, Carson Inlow came up with a clutch run scoring single in the bottom of the first to pull the Bearcats even at 1-1.
The summer league Bearcats returned to action Friday traveling to Tallahassee to take part in the Chiles High School Summer Invitational Tournament. The tournament concluded on Saturday.
Regular season action continues Monday when the Bearcats host the Lee County High School Trojans summer league team at 11 a.m. at the Bearcat Diamond. It will be their final home game of the season.
