Shelby Farmer has been named a reporter for The Post-Searchlight, Bainbridge Living magazine, Rifle and Rod magazine and the publications’ associated websites. She began work on Monday.

Farmer, 22, comes to Bainbridge from Statesboro, Georgia, where she studied journalism at Georgia Southern University. Farmer graduated in June with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.

“I’m really excited to work within such a vibrant and unique community,” Farmer said. “The people I’ve met so far have been absolutely wonderful, and I can’t wait to learn and share their stories.”

During her time at Georgia Southern, Farmer was a staff member of The George-Anne, Georgia Southern’s student newspaper, for more than two years. During her senior year, she served as the editor-in-chief of The George-Anne, managing a staff of more than 50 writers and editors.

“Serving as editor-in-chief was a tremendous learning experience. I not only learned about reporting and writing but also people. Everyone has their own histories, their own stories, and that’s why I like reporting,” Farmer said.

Post-Searchlight Managing Editor Powell Cobb said he was excited for Farmer to join the news team.

“We are more than excited to have Shelby join our team,” Cobb said. “She is a talented writer and I’m confident her experiences at Georgia Southern will transfer well to reporting all areas of news in Decatur County.”

After finishing school, Farmer said she is ready to really become a member of The Post-Searchlight and Bainbridge communities.

“I’m so lucky to have found this opportunity,” said Farmer. “I never thought that I’d be living so far south, especially with this sweltering heat, but after meeting some of the staff here and learning about their community-oriented values, I knew it was the perfect fit for me.”
