Junior point guard Tyree Crump hit three long 3-point jumpers to open the game Friday give the Bainbridge High School Bearcats basketball team and early 9-2 lead Friday night and they went on to down the visiting Seminole County High School Indians 79-64.
The win, led by Crump with 33 points, coupled with a Saturday night 74-50 win over the Region 1-AAAA Dougherty High School Trojans, improved the Bearcats record to 3-0
Bearcats coach Rickey McCullough was pleased with his team’s Friday and Saturday efforts against the Indians and Trojans.
“Seminole County is a rival and we were really up for them and played extremely well,” Bearcats coach Rickey McCullough said. “Tyree Crump had an outstanding effort. Each one of his early 3-point shots were a little big longer. They were all from mid court of further and they all got nothing but net.”
McCullough said after such a strong effort Friday night that the team might be a little flat Saturday night, but that was not the case.
“We also played really well against Dougherty,” he added.
The Bearcats went up by 14, 16-2 over the Indians Friday night when center Trevon Shaw, who finished with 25 points, hit a free throw with 2:42 left in the first quarter. They led 23-7 at the end of the first quarter.
A driving layup off the left glass by Crump with 1:48 showing on the first quarter clock gave the Bearcats a 37-26 lead.
Myles Thomas and Devontae Jones scored seven points and six points respectively for the Bearcats. Jordan Harris led the Indians with 35 points.
Crump and Shaw combined for 37 points in Saturday night’s win over the Trojans. Crump again led the way with 19 points and Shaw scored 18. A layup at the buzzer by Derrick Jones gave the Bearcats a 35-25 halftime lead. They led by 22, 61-39, after three quarters.
The Bearcats returned to action Tuesday when they took on the Colquitt County High School Packers in Moultrie.
They will host the Region 1-AAAA Westover High School Patriots Friday and take on the Region 1-AAAA Worth County High School Rams Saturday in Sylvester.
The Dougherty, Westover and Worth County games will not count against the Bearcats Region 1-AAAA record.
Each Region 1-AAAA team plays the other Region 1AAA team twice but only the second games will count in the Region 1AAAA standings. The Bearcats second game with Dougherty will be Friday, January 23.
