The Bainbridge High School Lady Cats softball team dropped a 4-0 Region 1-AAAA decision to the Worth County High School Lady Rams Tuesday in Sylvester and bounced back to down Albany’s Monroe High School Lady Tornadoes in a 13-3 region game Thursday at the Lady Cats Diamond.
Lady Cats right-handed pitcher Abigail Gardner shut out the Lady Rams through the first four innings. She struck out two and walked one. All four Lady Rams runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“We played particularly well on defense Tuesday,” Lady Cats coach Chris Bryant said. “Left fielder Taylor Swanner, center fielder Haley Thompson and right fielder Mabry-Grace Briggs all made some outstanding catches to preserve the shutout early.”
Coach Bryant also liked the defensive play of catcher Morgan Cannon, second baseman Mckynleigh Harrell, shortstop Shelbie Summerlin and first baseman Tori Sprenkle.
“We played strong defense the entire game Tuesday, but we just could not seem to be able to get anything going offensively,” coach Bryant said.
The Lady Cats threatened in the sixth inning when Desurae Beachem doubled, but she was stranded.
On Thursday against Monroe, the Lady Cats, who are 4-4 overall and 2-1 in Region 1-AAAA play, took command early, rallying for six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Center fielder Haley Thompson led off the inning with a single, moved up to second on a single by winning pitcher Reily Fletcher and came in on leftfielder Taylor Swanner’s single, followed by catcher Morgan Cannon clearing the bases with a triple.
Coach Bryant said his offense really got untracked against Monroe when they laid some bunts down in the second.
“Our bunts really produced some fielding problems in the second inning and we took advantage of it,” he said.
