The Bainbridge High School Lady Cats basketball team edged the Jonesboro High School Lady Cardinals 50-49 Thursday on the road. With the win the Lady Cats advance to the second round of the State Class AAAA Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Cats will play the North Oconee High School Lady Titans in their second-round game Friday in Bogart near Athens.
The Lady Cats and the Lady Cardinals battled back and forth until the final buzzer in a game that featured several lead changes in the fourth quarter.
“We had some key players really come through big down the stretch that allowed us to be victorious,” Head Coach Kelvin Cochran said Thursday morning. “Tytiana Roseborough, who was coming back from a slight knee injury, had some clutch baskets late that really helped us pull out the win.”
The Lady Cats trailed by four late, but two big buckets from Roseborough put the Lady Cats back in front. She hit a three pointer to cut the deficit to just one and then followed it up with a two-point bucket to put Bainbridge up by one.
After Jonesboro hit a free throw to tie it again, Nadia Marshal hit one of two free throws to seal the victory for the Lady Cats.
Jonesboro jumped out quickly in the game, taking a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Cats bounced back to outscore them 13-4 in the second quarter to trail by just one, 18-17 at halftime.
A 16 -13 third quarter scoring edge enabled Jonesboro to widen their lead to 34-30 entering the fourth quarter. A 20-15 fourth quarter scoring edge enabled the
Lady Cats to pull out the victory.
The Lady Cats were led in scoring by Marshall who had a team high 18 points. Roseborough was also in double figures with 17 including her five-point flourish in the closing minute to win the game. Rounding out the Lady Cats scoring column were Alexis Russ with nine, Tiara King with four and Asia Gordon with two.
