The Bainbridge High School Lady Cats were eliminated from the state tournament Thursday with a loss to the Wayne County High School Lady Yellow Jackets in the elite eight. The Lady Yellow Jackets won 47-38 to advance to the final four.
Sophomore forward Nadia Marshall, the Lady Cats’ leading scorer with 16 points, was called for two fouls in the first three minutes of the game and had to be taken out of the game early.
“Losing Nadia to foul trouble early hurt, but several other players picked up the slack and kept it close,” Lady Cats’ Head Coach Kelvin Cochran said.
Rounding out the Lady Cats’ scoring column were Rakia Hughes with nine, Tytianna Roseborough with nine, Asia Gordon with eight, Alexis Russ with three and Rickia Hughes with two.
The Lady Cats, who end the season 24-7, got what coach Cochran termed “outstanding senior leadership” during the 2015-2016 season.
“Senior forwards Asia Gordon, Alexis Gaines, Carolyn Jackson, and Rickia Hughes always gave 100 percent efforts along with senior guards Alexis Russ and Tianna Miller,” Coach Cochran said. “They always played hard on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.”
Several former Bainbridge High School Bearcats and Lady Cats’ players, including former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket and New Yorks Giants James Butler, where in attendance at the game. Former Lady Cat and Rutgers University basketball player Alexis Burke was also at the game.
“Our young ladies realize that they are not only playing for themselves, but are also carrying on the strong tradition of past athletes,” Cochran said.
