The Georgia/Alabama Junior Tennis Open Championship for the 10-14 age groups was hosted at the Bill Reynolds Tennis Center Monday and Tuesday. The event was originally scheduled to take place from Saturday-Tuesday, but inclement weather forced matches to be rescheduled to Monday and Tuesday only.

87 players from throughout the Southeast participated in the Level II championship over the two days.

“Its always nice to see the great sportsmanship attitude and the general camaraderie among tennis players,” Timothy Thompson, Bainbridge tennis director, said.

In the boys’ 14-year old singles championship on Tuesday Edward Tymes defeated Lewis Gray 6-4, 6-2. Cy McLeod defeated Nicholas Kazamais 6-4, 6-1 to secure third place in the division.

In the boys’ 12-year old singles championship Cortland Grove defeated Blake Hilsen 6-2, 1-6, 1-0. Hilsen was awarded the boys’ Sportsmanship trophy at the conclusion of the tournament,

Paris Pouatcha defeated Charlie Griffin 6-4, 6-3 to earn third place in the boys’ 12-year old division.

In the boys’ 10-year old division Isaac Buerkle won the championship in a round robin format. He defeated Mark Breedlove 4-0, 4-0 and Julian Fernandez 4-0, 4-2 to win the title.

In the girls’ 14-year old division Hayden Smith won the championship with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Josephine Tidmore and Hope McGraw won third place with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lauren Wilson.

Marleigh Green won the girls’ 12-year old title with a 6-1,6-0 victory over Olivia Nelson.

Ariana Gilbert won the girls’ 10-year old championship in a round robin tournament with victories over Yvonne Shannon, 5-3, 5-3, and Abby Moody, 2-4, 4-0, 1-0.

Of the 87 competitors at this year’s competition five of them were from Bainbridge.

“Its a tremendous thing because we get a lot of people from throughout the state,” Thompson said. “For our players it gives them a chance to have home court advantage and they get to stay in their beds.”
