The City of Bainbridge’s plan to revitalize the Earle May Boat Basin is in full swing. Beginning with the moving of the train to Corbin, Kentucky in January, the city has been working to clean up the surrounding area.

“The next step is to move the emus and then to try and open that entire area down there for camping and more fishing and picnic area,” City Manager Chris Hobby said.

Some of the emus have been moved to the new animal enclosure along with the goats and donkey. The rest of them are expected to be moved from their present location by July 1, according to Hobby. The old sawmill has also been moved and is currently being stored behind the John-Johnson Elementary until a decision can be made on the equipment’s future.

“Perhaps the history museum would be interested, maybe, in some of the pieces for permanent display. We are waiting to hear from someone that might be interested in a permanent display.”

Future plans for the area include expanding and completing the campground and adding additional picnic tables, pavilions and grills so residents and visitors can better enjoy the area.

“We’re just trying to improve the quality of recreational options in Bainbridge is the reason why we trying to do what we’re doing,” city councilman Phil Long said. “We’re missing a big opportunity with the river running through there not to have picnic tables and pavilions and grills.”

The city also recently purchased a footbridge that will go over the boat canal and allow them to complete the nature trail. The bridge was purchased using a Georgia Trails Grant and it is currently being stored at Steward Machine for modifications. It is expected to be in place no later than October 1.
