Tony Cooper of Port City Toastmasters, which meets every Monday at noon at Bainbridge State College’s Kirbo Center, updated the Bainbridge Lions Club Wednesday on the organization’s mission and history.

“Our mission is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self confidence and personal growth.”

Turning to the history of the organization, Cooper told the Lions that the first toastmasters meeting was held in Santa Ana, California, in 1924.

“Membership in toastmasters became open to women in 1973,” Cooper said. “Membership reached 100,000 in 1982, 200,000 in 2004 and 300,000 in 2014.”

Cooper further pointed out that there are several reasons to consider joining toastmasters.

“First of all you, you’ll be recognized as an authority on your topic. Secondly you will be recognized as a leader in your company, and thirdly, you’ll be talked about in a positive light when opportunities are mentioned,” Cooper said.

The cost of joining toastmasters is $50 every six months.
