Steve Carter of Attapulgus was arrested Monday morning after being wanted for over five weeks with warrants for obstruction and possession of a controlled substance suspected to be methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as molly.

According to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on Sunday, May 29, Deputy Vincent Edmond saw Carter driving on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Edmond was familiar with Carter from previous law enforcement encounters and knew his driver’s license to be suspended, so he initiated a traffic stop.

Edmond said that once he began to follow Carter, “He [Carter] made a left onto Scott Street, went south, pulled into the Las Lomas convenience store, jumped out and ran; he fled.”

According to Edmond, he didn’t try to pursue the suspect, because he knew him. “When he ran, he dropped a small baggie of crystal like substances we suspect is going to be molly,” said Edmond. According to Edmond, the baggie contained “about a gram” of molly.

The next day, Edmond signed warrants for Carter, and almost a month later, Carter was finally taken into custody. “We received information that he was located at the Western Hotel,” said Edmond, “and me and another deputy proceeded to that address and found him in a hotel room.”

“Last year, we saw it [molly] the most, but as of this year, it’s kind of phased out,” said Edmond. “It’s a synthetic designer drug. That is usually how they work. Synthetic drugs-they’re created. Somebody goes in a lab and creates them, and once the legislature finds out what’s all into the content and the make of the drug, they make laws to outlaw the combination of the compounds that make the drug. The people that make the drug have usually went on to find something else, some kind of another kind of ingredient to put into it.”
