A 13-year-old Bainbridge Middle School student was killed in a single car accident on Sasser Store Road Sunday evening.

According to Georgia State Patrol sergeant Tracy Tabb, the boy was driving a 2000 Lincoln Navigator that he had taken without his parent’s permission. The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to navigate a curve.

According to Tabb, the driver lost control of the car after trying to overcorrect from crossing into the southbound lane.

“The vehicle traveled off the roadway and into the east ditch,” Tabb said.

The vehicle then “vaulted” off the ground according to Tabb, causing it to land on the driver’s side and roll one and a half times before hitting a pine tree.

“He made contact with something that made him go up in the air and vault over,” Tabb said. “It landed on its driver side. That’s when the driver was ejected from the vehicle. That’s where he came out of the vehicle in the driver’s side window.”

A 10-year-boy who was seated unrestrained in the front passenger seat suffered severe, but not life threatening cuts to his arms and legs, according to Tabb. It is believed that he made contact with structures including the dashboard and center council on the interior of the vehicle, which kept him from being ejected.
