The Lady Cats won their first game of the season on Friday with a 44-38 victory over Dougherty. The Lady Cats were led in the win by Nadia Marshall who bounced back from a tough game in the season opener. Marshall scored seven of her points from the free throw line and overcame early foul trouble to finish with a game high 16 points, three assists and three steals.

“She needs to be putting people in foul trouble instead of them putting her in foul trouble,” head coach Kelvin Cochran said. “She’s a great free throw shooter. She’s led the team the last two years… She’s got to be aggressive. That’s a part of her game that she can excel at.”

Bainbridge (1-1) held a 13-5 lead after the first quarter and was up 23-16 at halftime.

“We out executed them,” Cochran said. “Defense wasn’t bad. We had some lapses again… Overall, the girls played a lot more calm. It wasn’t so rushed. We didn’t turnover the ball as much. I liked the energy.”

Dougherty cut Bainbridge’s lead to five at the end of the third quarter, but the Lady Cats outscored the Lady Trojans 15-14 in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.

“We’re getting better attention to detail,” Cochran said. “We’ve still got some mental errors, but I see them trying. They might not do it right every time, but they aren’t making the same mistakes again every day.”

Tytianna Roseborough finished the game with seven points, six rebounds and five assists and Tyra Smart had 11 points and went 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

“[Tytianna] does a little of everything for us,” Cochran said. “I told her, her role has to step up from just shooter. She’s got to handle the ball a lot more and she’s going to have to drive and help. She needs to get to the free throw line.”

The Lady Cats also saw a breakout game from center India Parris who finished with four points and five rebounds.

“She just doesn’t know how good she can be right now,” Cochran said. “We are trying to feed it to her because she’s a big body down there… Now we’ve got an inside presence and that’s going to open it up more for Tytianna and Tyra to get wide-open shots. They’re going to have to worry about India or else she better dominate down there.”

The Lady Cats hosted Colquitt on Tuesday and travel to Thomasville on Friday.
