Bearcat Baseball loses to Veterans, defeats Brookwood

The Bainbridge High School baseball team dropped its first region game of the year to Veterans on Friday, but rebounded on Monday with a non-league victory over Brookwood.

Bainbridge and Veterans were both scoreless through two innings before the Warhawks broke open the game in the top of the third. Bainbridge quickly recorded the first two outs of the inning on a fly out to second and a strike out, but the third batter of the inning was able to reach on a hard hit grounder to short. Noah Bryant, who started on the mound for Bainbridge, walked the next batter to place a man on first and second with two outs. The next Veterans batter crushed a line drive to the wall in left field for a two-run double to give Veterans the lead.

The Bearcats cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fourth when Griffin Long singles on a grounder through the gap into right field. The hit scored Will Kelley, who led off the inning with a single to center.

Veterans added two more runs to their total in the fifth inning and chased Bryant from the game after 4.2 innings pitched. He finished with three strikeouts and allowed four runs on six hits.

Veterans brought across two insurance runs in the top of the sixth for a 6-1 lead over the Bearcats.

Bryant, who moved to catcher after leaving the mound, cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the inning on a double to left field that scored Keith Lyle and Will Kelley, but they were the final runs Bainbridge could muster in the game.

On Monday, Bainbridge defeated Brookwood 7-1 thanks to a near complete game on the mound from Clark Wiggins. He threw 6.1 innings and allowed only one run on two hits while striking out nine.

The Bearcats did most of their damage in the fifth inning when they scored five of their seven runs.

Bryant reached on an error to open the inning and Keith Lyle singled to center to put runners on first and second. Will Kelley drove them home with a double to left field to add two runs to the one Bainbridge scored in the first inning.

Long singled to left to put runners on the corners. Will Kelley scored from third on a fielder’s choice to give Bainbridge a 4-0 lead. The Bearcats added their fifth and sixth runs of the game when Carson Inlow was walked with the bases loaded and Noah Bryant was hit by a pitch after Bainbridge had batted around in the inning.

Overall, Bainbridge out hit Brookwood 11-2 in the game.

Te Bearcats hosted Thomas County Central for a key region game on Tuesday and will return to the field Friday with a road game at Harris County.
