A crashed vehicle led to the arrest of a 25 year-old Bainbridge man Thursday morning near the Bill Reynolds Sports Park.

Derrick Carter was driving down Hubert Dollar Drive, approaching Cox Avenue when a jogger noticed him swerving. The jogger witnessed Carter crash into the sign at the intersection of Hubert Dollar Drive and Cox Avenue.

According to Bainbridge Public Safety investigator Chris Avery, the jogger approached the vehicle after the crash to see if the driver was alright. When the jogger saw Carter exit the vehicle under his own power, she continued on her jog.

Carter then got out of the car and followed the jogger under the impression that he had hit her according to Avery.

Per BPS Public Information Officer Julie Harris, the jogger approached City of Bainbridge employees because she was concerned about the man following her. The employees notified BPS.

Carter ran back to his vehicle and grabbed a handgun. Carter then ran into the woods, presumably to hide the handgun according to Harris.

BPS and Decatur County Sheriff’s Office both deployed their canine units and flushed Carter out of the woods. BPS’ canine found the handgun and the synthetic drug “spice” in the vehicle, according to Avery.

Carter was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and sticking a fixed object.
