Late Thursday night, Decatur County Fire and Rescue along with Kendrick VFD were dispatched to a single car accident on Spring Creek Road.
Bryce Kelly was driving when he said he fell asleep and ran off the road into the embankment and hit surrounding trees. Kelly said, when he woke up and realized what had happened, it was too late.
“My first thought was to hold on for dear life,” said Kelly.
Luckily, Kelly managed to get out of the vehicle and walk about a tenth of a mile to a nearby house to call for help. Kelly said his cell phone had gotten stuck up under the gas pedal and he was unable to reach it.
Kelly said his driver’s door and window were blocked by a tree, so he crawled to his passenger window and busted it out. He then climbed out the window and up the hill to find a house. He said his biggest fear was that no one would be able to find him because of his obscure location.
Lieutenant Eddie Polk upon arrival began to secure the vehicle and assess Kelly. About a minute into assessing Kelly, Polk said EMS arrived and patient care was turned over to them. They assisted in packaging and loading Kelly into the ambulance. Kelly was treated for a gash in his head and a piece of glass that got lodged above his eye. After a series of stitches, Kelly was released.
He warned everyone to get enough sleep before they get behind the wheel of a car.
