The Bainbridge Bearcats attended their second tournament to start the season, where they lost to Valdosta 61-55 and beat Peach County 60-44.
The Bearcats are now 2-2 on the season.
Against Valdosta, the Bearcats were for the most part even competition. The big difference maker was the amount of 2-point shots Valdosta hit.
“They just shot the ball well from the floor,” coach Terry Smith said. “It wasn’t like there were a lot of easy shots. Ninety percent of the shots were contested shots. I take my hat off to Valdosta, those guys shot the ball exceptionally well.”
Desmond Thomas and Jaylen Jones tied for leading scorers with 14 points each. Jaylyn Scott and Deunta Gardner both had 7 points.
Thomas poured in four 3-pointers on five attempts.
“We didn’t turn the ball over that much,”Smith said. “That is one of the things we have improved on from last year.”
Bainbridge came back the next day with a big win against Peach County. The Bearcats were only up by 5 points at the half, and the defense took over in the second half.
“When we hold teams under 50 points, we typically win those,” Smith said. “It was a great defensive effort from our guys in the second half, and we shot the ball well from the floor.”
The Bearcats return to action next Tuesday when they host Colquitt County at the BHS Gym at 7:30 p.m.
