Dr. Patrick Alan Smith, professor of English at Bainbridge State College, Georgia, born January 11, 1967, in Brookville, Pennsylvania, lost his three-year battle with cancer and passed away quietly on Sunday April 22, 2018, at 8:50 in the evening.

Dr. Smith graduated from Penn State University in 1990 with a degree in English and from Ohio University with a PhD in 1997. He authored numerous books including Tim O’Brien: A Critical Companion; The True Bones of My Life: Essays on the Fiction of Jim Harrison; Conversations with Tim Obrien; Conversations with William Gibson; and Thematic Guide to Popular Short Fiction as well as being a ghost writer of numerous books. His work has appeared in Studies in Short Fiction, Quarter after Eight, Scribner’s American Writers, Scribner’s British Writers, Aethlon, and other publications.  In addition, he was associate editor of Bookmarks, a book review publication.

Patrick is survived by his two boys, Eric age twelve and Matthew age fourteen, his mother Martha Smith of Bainbridge, Georgia, his brother Matthew Smith of Wyoming, and life partner Tricia Boyett of Tallahassee. Patrick left behind a great number of friends. He was preceded in death by his father Bud Smith.  His charm, intelligence, and kindness will be missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of Patrick’s life will be held at the Bainbridge State College solarium on Thursday, April 26, at 1:30 in the afternoon. A scholarship fund is being established in Patrick’s honor at the Bainbridge State College. Contributions can be made payable to: Bainbridge State College Fund, P.O.
