Alice Luvern Josey Newberry passed away peacefully at Big Bend Hospice on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 in Tallahassee at the age of 81.
The service was held on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at 10 am. at Mt. Glory Freewill Baptist Church, with burial at the church cemetery. Family received friends on Friday, July 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Independent Funeral Home (850-875-1529).
Luvern was born on January 26, 1937, in Brinson, Ga. to Russell and Maggie Josey.
Luvern married Wesley Newberry on July 11, 1952. She spent 42 years working for Gadsden County School Board as a bus driver and lunchroom worker.
Luvern is survived by her children: Elfredia Sneads (Harry), Deborah Alday Phillips (Marion), Jean Alderman (Jackie), Mary Brumby (Kevin) and Charles Daniel Newberry; a sister, Susie Andrews; twelve grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.
Luvern was the widow of Wesley Newberry; also preceded in death by four brothers; one sister; one son, Lester Newberry and one grandson, Wesley Alderman.
