Dr. Pete Sharber, 79, of Leesburg, Ga., died September 12, 2018, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Sherwood Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Living Word Sunday School Class. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. in the Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge, Georgia. Military honors will be provided by The United States Army Honor Guard. Dr. Randy Stinson will officiate.

A native of Bainbridge, Dr. Sharber graduated from Bainbridge High School and married the love of his life, Faye Garner Sharber in 1962.  He received his BA from Mercer University, his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Ministry from Drew University. He was a career military man, reaching the rank of Colonel in the US Army and serving overseas in Vietnam and was called back to active service for Desert Storm.

He was a minister at the First Baptist Church in Hazelhurst for fifteen years and at the Bronwood Baptist Church for four years.  Dr. Sharber was employed with the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as the Director of Chaplaincy, and had lived in Leesburg since 2007. Dr. Sharber was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church where he attended the Living Word Sunday School Class. He truly loved God’s Word and was a gifted teacher and beloved pastor.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Sharber, Leesburg; daughters, Melanie Merritt and her husband, Jeff and Cheryl Thompson, all of Lee County; his siblings, James Edwin Sharber and Martha Clement both of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Jonathan Siskey and his wife, Laura of Albany, Ga., Kathryn Siskey, Ethan Merritt, Emily Thompson, Hannah Thompson, and Caleb Thompson all of Lee County, and one great-granddaughter, Adeline Siskey.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 12 Noon until 1 PM at the atrium of Sherwood Baptist Church.
