Bainbridge native Karen Grimes will be in town this weekend to hold a signing for her new book, “A Celebration of the Georgia State Symbols.”

As a retired Georgia history teacher at the Georgia Military College Prep School in Milledgeville, Grimes has taken her love, passion and knowledge of Georgia and poured it into the pages of a colorful, educational book that showcases Georgia’s symbols.

Despite retiring in 2017, she continues to help young people learn through her new book.

Vividly illustrated by Grimes and her mother, Evelyn Knight, who lives in Bainbridge, the book is narrated by two brown thrashers, Mark and Maggie. They are getting ready to start an exciting day where they will explore and locate various Georgia state symbols.

Children will follow Mark and Maggie on their adventure as they meet new friends and discover the true beauty of Georgia’s landscape. From abundant native azaleas to towering live oaks, A Celebration of the Georgia State Symbols can be used for a great outdoor activity where children can spot the various symbols.

“Georgia has such an interesting history, from its founding as the thirteenth colony to the home of one of the largest airports in the world,” said Grimes in a press release. “It is important for students to learn about where they live, the resources they have around them, and the impact their state has in the world.”

Grimes will be at Flint River Outfitters this Saturday, Dec. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon signing and selling her book. “A Celebration of the Georgia State Symbols” can also be purchased online at amazon.com, karengrimesbooks.com and shop.booklogix.com.

Space for the book signing was graciously given by Edwin and Lynda McCullers, owners of Flint River Outfitters.
