Devin C. Thompson, the former public address announcer of the Bainbridge High School basketball, baseball, soccer, softball and track teams, will return to the role in his first season for the Bearcat Football program.
Thompson, who left the position in 2014 to attend college and become the PA announcer at Young Harris College and Georgia Southern University, will take on additional duties under the Friday night lights in his hometown.
Cathy Cox, Former President of Young Harris College and current Dean of Mercer Law School, believed in Thompson from the beginning.
“Devin’s incredible voice is really a gift,” said Cox. “He became the voice of our Mountain Lions while I was president of Young Harris College and he added such an air of professionalism to our games. But more importantly, Devin knows how to use his voice to add excitement to a game and how to get the crowd more deeply engaged. The Bearcats are so lucky to get him back!”
Ricky McCollough, former Bainbridge High School boys’ basketball coach, also reflected on Thompson’s abilities.
“Devin’s enthusiasm on the court resonated with our basketball fans,” said McCullough. “Pam and I are proud of him and know Bainbridge is glad to have him back telling the story. He’s certainly got a gift.”
“I am blessed and honored to bring the energy and passion back to Bainbridge that our football program and Bearcat Nation truly deserves under those Friday night lights,” said Thompson. “After one of the greatest games ever witnessed in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, our State Champions and Bearcat Nation are extremely excited about the upcoming season. I look forward to the opportunity and chance to be a part of the winning traditions on and off the field.”
In addition to calling the action from the Bearcats press box this season, he will continue his duties as Public Address Announcer for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Thompson joined the Georgia Tech Athletic Association in 2018.
Thompson continues to be a focal point within the community and his alma mater since becoming a student and PA announcer in 2010.
“I want to thank Bainbridge High School Principal Roy Matthews and Associate Athletic Directors Scott Miller and Jimmy Harris for this amazing opportunity to assist in the Game Day experience,” said Thompson. “I always wanted to announce for the hometown football team, even when I was a student. Getting the chance to tell the Bearcat story five years later is something very special to me.”
During his time as a student at Bainbridge High School, Thompson was thoroughly involved from academics to extracurricular activities. Being the drum major for the “Pride of Decatur County” and building those long-lasting relationships with his peers was the highlight of his high school career.
“Mr. Ward and the Decatur County Band program continue to be an integral part of my success in my personal and professional life,” said Thompson. “Mr. Ward has been a tremendous blessing in shaping my future to becoming one of tomorrow’s leaders.”
Paschal Ward, Former Director of Bands, praised Thompson’s efforts of continuing to live out his dream.
“Devin was a tremendous leader for me in the Decatur County Band program with an abundance of high energy, passion and dedication,” said Ward. “The BHS administration made a great decision by bringing him back. He’s a gifted and talented individual who the crowd will certainly enjoy.”
