Georgia baseball was having an outstanding season, but it all came crashing down this weekend when Florida State came to the Athens Regional and punched the Bulldogs in the mouth.

The Seminoles ate Georgia’s pitching alive and blasted three homers on the way to a 12-3 win in last Saturday’s regional game in Athens.

The Bulldogs had their aces on the mound, but Florida State was beating them up like it was their job. Hit after hit after hit. I was getting so tired of it, I had to turn the TV off. When Georgia met FSU again in a do-or-die game the next day, I was fully expecting the Dawgs to come back with a little fight in them. Nope. The Noles did exactly the same thing and won 10-1.

Florida State had a little something extra going for them, too. As Noles fans know, coach Mike Martin is the all-time winningest baseball coach in the NCAA. He has been coaching FSU since 1980. That’s 2021 wins. Well, Martin is retiring after this season, and despite all those wins, the Florida State baseball team still has no College World Series championship under its belt.

I think God is shining his light down on Florida State this postseason. Georgia was no scrub team—the No. 4 team in the country, mind you. It took some serious guns to score runs like that in Athens last weekend. It hasn’t been a bad season for Florida State, but it hasn’t exactly been the best, either. So Florida State is playing like they have nothing to lose. And look what happened. They crushed the competition in the Athens Regional.

As much as I’ve enjoyed watching the Georgia baseball team, I gotta say, I’m excited to see if the Seminoles can do it again. It’s one thing to catch a (likely overconfident) Georgia team on a bad day, but it’s another to turn this into an actual title run. Can Florida State capture that elusive College World Series trophy?

The Seminoles have LSU next on the list, and I hope they whip the Tigers. For ole Coach Martin.
