Decatur County Farm Bureau (DCFB) received three awards for its volunteer programs during the Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) 9th District annual meeting, held Oct. 17 in Camilla. Justin Long is the DCFB president.

The DCFB Women’s Leadership Committee, chaired by Kelli Long, received the 9th District Outstanding Women’s Leadership Program Award.

Among its activities during the past year, the committee arranged for volunteer readers to visit local schools during National Ag Week in March. The volunteers read farm-focused books, made butter, planted gardens in cups for students to take home, handed out pine seedlings and had the Georgia Mobile Dairy Classroom present milk and dairy facts during milking demonstrations. The program exposed more than 1,400 students to agricultural topics.

The DCFB Promotion & Education Committee, chaired by Alan Davis, received the 9th District Outstanding Promotion & Education Award.

The committee led an agriculture in the classroom workshop for local teachers at the Cloud Livestock Building on June 25. The teachers were fed and then visited Long Farms and Providence Dairy for tours. The event provided the teachers with ag-themed educational resources.

DCFB was presented with the GFB Membership Award, presented to county Farm Bureaus that increased their membership over the previous year.

The GFB 9th District includes 14 counties in southwestern Georgia.

Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the state’s largest general farm organization and has 158 county offices.

Its volunteer members actively participate in local, state and national activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors. GFB offers its members a wide variety of benefits, including insurance, but enrollment in member benefits is optional and not a requirement for membership.
