Decatur County 4-H’ers, Corbin Austin, Kinsey Ward and Thomas Neal, attended The Senior Event on June 26-27 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center. They joined other 4-H’ers and leaders throughout Georgia, representing almost every county in the state.

The fast paced weekend was filled with opportunities to explore Georgia 4-H and focused on applying 4-H to everyday life. 4-H’ers also elected state 4-H officers, and exchanged ideas with new friends. Additionally, 4-H’ers from each district competed for the Iron Clover Award. This rotating award is presented annually to the district that excels in competitions such as softball, volleyball, pool relay, and 4-H Quiz Bowl— just to name a few.

During the opening assembly, Decatur County 4-H’er, Corbin Austin was announced the winner of the William “Bill” Edwards 4-H Communications and the Arts Dean’s Award. The Dean’s Awards competition provides 4-H’ers with the opportunity to showcase their talent, hard work, and commitment to their community. The Dean’s Award is one of the highest honors Georgia 4-H members can earn. Competitors submit a cumulative portfolio that covers their entire 4-H career, and high-scoring submissions are invited to participate in a separately-judged interview session. Corbin will receive Master 4-H’er status, a $500 scholarship and recognition at 4-H Day at the Capitol.

The Senior Event or State 4-H Council is the annual meeting of the Georgia 4-H Assembly, with each county represented. This event is just one of many leadership workshops provided for senior 4-H’ers in grades ninth through 12th.
