A crowd of children gathered by the road at Spring Creek Charter Academy last Tuesday afternoon. Accompanied by their teachers, the first graders stood around a hole dug beneath the school’s entrance sign, eagerly watching as the adults placed the class’ time capsule in the hole. The capsule will not be opened until the students are seniors, in 11 year’s time.
SCCA teacher Rachael Bray spoke to the Post-Searchlight about the project, explaining the inspiration. “We decided to do a time capsule because these students were going to be lucky enough to experience Two’s Day and 3-3-33 in their schooling,” she said. The plaque lists the burial date as 2/22/22 (Two’s Day), despite being buried in April. “We decided to open it on another special numeric date since the students will be seniors. March 3, 2033, will be 3/3/33, so it felt right to celebrate then!”
Students were asked to write about who they are now, and who they hope to be in the future, to include in the capsule, along with a signed class photo. “We also included our class’ favorite books, consisting of ‘The Book With No Pictures’ and ‘Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.’” Bray said.
According to Bray, both parents and students were excited about the project. “Parents actually expressed that they really wanted their child to create a time capsule,” she recounted. “They were very vocal and involved in our time capsule process!”
In conclusion, Bray thanked those that made the project possible: “We would like to give a huge thank you to Lee Monuments & Memorials, for helping us bury and mark our time capsule, as well as our SCCA family for being so supportive and helping make this happen for us and our students!”
To the class of 2033, best of luck, and hopefully those predictions for the future age well!
