The Lady Cats and Bearcats tennis teams claimed a Region Championship last Wednesday after defeating Thomas County Central in a tough-fought match.
The Lady Cats won 5-0 against TCC in the 3rd round of the championship.
Number one singles Rylan Bland started off the match strong, finishing quickly with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Charlize Scudder.
Number two singles, Riley Palmer also had a strong showing, wiping out Claire Pope 6-0, 6-0.
“These two girls came out and just blew the competition out of the water throughout every round,” said Head Coach Amy Thomas.
Number three singles, Lily Tomek could be found on her court, battling it out until the very end against Samantha Jennings, 7-5, 6-1.
Tomek won her first set in a tiebreaker, which really shifted the mood for the rest of the team.
“She, along with number one and two doubles, was playing a much-improved TCC team,” Thomas said. “She battled in the first set, she was down and ended up winning the tiebreaker, setting the tone.”
With Tomek’s win, number one and two doubles came out dominant.
Number one doubles Brooklyn Wade and Abigail Trammel won over Heali Patel and MaKaina Griffin won in a tight set of three, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0.
Number two doubles, Kaylee Grace Buchanan and Megan Springer also faced a tough set of three, eventually winning over Loxley Slocumb and Jacey Keaton, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0.
With a huge victory, the Lady Cats then turned to watch the Bearcats win over TCC, 3-2, for their own Region Championship.
Number one singles Cullen Glover began the match for the Bearcats with a victory over Keaton Stephens 6-2, 6-1.
Number two singles, Brent Miller followed up Glover with a win of his own, 6-3, 6-2, against Cable Willis.
With a 2-0 lead, number three singles Gamble Tabb fell short in his match against Jaylen Duncan 6-1, 6-0.
Number one doubles, Aiden Odom and Joseph Marshall pulled out the victory, though, winning over Joshua Williamson and Caleb Kineer, 6-3, 6-1.
TCC’s CJ Covington and Braxton White got the final win of the day against number two doubles Skylar Jones and Levi Sanchez Lopez in a close set, 7-6, 7-5.
Both the Bearcats and Lady Cats will now have a bye week due to their standing.
They will then host the winner of Luella vs. Cedartown at the BHS Courts.
Thomas believes they will play April 22, but is awaiting to see.
