On Thursday, February 9 the Bainbridge High School Baseball team took the field for the first time in 2023 as they picked up their first win of the season, defeating Seminole County 10-3. With the Bearcats first win of the season, their performance on Thursday is a preview of what is to come this season.
The Bearcats offense was awake early as centerfielder Bo Smith recorded the first hit of 2022 with a loud single down the third base line in the first inning. Upset that he didn’t stretch it out for a double, Smith made the most of his second at-bat as he stepped up to the plate with two runners on. Smith smoked the fourth pitch of the at-bat into centerfield, scoring two runs as he dug into third base with a triple.
After four innings, the Bearcats held on to a 5-1 lead before their offense once again took over the game in the fifth inning. The fifth inning saw the Bearcats bring in four runs as Koby Wynn, Luke Griffin, Keenan Phillips and Bolton Yarbrough all came across the plate in the inning. Another run in the sixth inning gave the Bearcats a more than comfortable lead as they closed out the seventh inning with a 10-3 lead, securing their first win of 2023.
Offensively, the Bearcats were led by Bo Smith who went 4-4 with four hits and three runs batted in. On the mound Bearcats ace Kagen Castro picked up the win as he pitched 4.2 innings, only allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. Chris Cooper came in relief to close the game out as he threw 2.1 innings, only allowing one hit and one run on three strikeouts.
After their emphatic win against Seminole County to start the season, the Bearcats will begin the 26 game, three month regular season marathon as their next game will be at home against Lee County on Valentine’s Day.
