James Millard Williamson was born November 10, 1927, in Bainbridge, GA, the son of Fred & Ruby Hughes Williamson. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. James married LaJean Powell in 1950, and they made their home in Bainbridge. He worked at Miller Hydro, retiring with 52 years. During many of those years, he would leave Miller Hydro and pull a shift at Jim Woodruff Dam during the initial construction. James was a member and served as treasurer for many years at First Church of God.
James “walked his talk” with a gentle spirit. He valued being organized and was known for his ability to fix most anything from washers, dryers, televisions, and even the home remodels. He loved a deal…so much so he would purchase his biscuit at Hardee’s and drive down to Harvey’s for a thirty-five cent Pepsi. James enjoyed watching and playing sports. At the ripe age of 72, he was on the pitcher’s mound or first base in the church softball league. He took up golf in his seventies and proved athletes are athletes no matter their age. James had a heart for others and his love language was service. He built the current First Church of God building and was there every time the doors were open.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, LaJean Powell Williamson; his children, Carole & Bob Henderson; his grandchildren, Jamie & Kristy, Jennifer, Allison & Jimbo, and Kyle & Kiley; his great-grandchildren, Addison & Aubrey, Carly & David, Jase, Ella Grace, and Cole; his great-great-grandson, Graydon; and his brother, Jack Williamson. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his daughter, Marilyn Williamson Elkins Lashley, and his siblings, Fredda Salter, Fred Williamson, Jr., and Larry Williamson.
