Senior Nicholas Tyre puts the team on his… leg this season as the team’s starting kicker and punter.
Head Coach Jeff Littleton takes on the role of special teams coach in addition to his head coaching duties. He said Tyre’s strengths are dependability and, literally, leg strength.
Tyre plays soccer for the school. He said he uses what he’s learned from the sport to help him kick in football.
“I’ve got that soccer background,” Tyre said. “It’s a little bit different, but if you got that soccer experience, you know, kicking is kicking.”
Behind the four-year kicker are sophomore Riggs Rentz and freshman Junior Miranda. Rentz said he learned a lot as Tyre’s backup last year and looks to keep that up this season.
“Keep learning and keep watching,” Rentz said about what he wants to take away from another year under Tyre. “He’s taught me everything, pretty much.”
The team has three long/short snappers to complement each kicker. Senior defensive lineman Bradley Marshburn doubles as the team’s starting snapper. Under him are junior Matthew Springer and first-year snapper Conner Simmons.
Three returners round out the special teams group. Coach Littleton said Senior running back Kennan Phillips and senior wide receiver Antavious Murphy are up for the starting role. Senior quarterback Cam Sanders will come in occasionally for a fair catch.
