The Cougars beat Sherwood Christian Academy 26-16. Head Coach Richard McClure said the win served as a learning experience for the underclassmen on the team.
The Cougars gained a lead early in the first half and maintained a two-possession lead. The lead allowed McClure to give his underclassmen players playing time.
“We did get a lot of our younger guys in the game,” McClure said. “We were able to get them some actual game experience against guys that are their same size and age… that’ll be valuable later on down the road.”
McClure said he was happy with the win but said the way his team won left more to desire.
“We just did today we should have done today,” McClure said. “We should have won this game. That’s what we were supposed to do.”
McClure’s sentiment came from Sherwood bringing a mixed team of junior varsity and varsity players. He also felt his team lacked the level of intensity needed to beat a full varsity team.
“We just were lackadaisical and came out lethargic,” McClure said.
He attributed some lethargy to the game’s 5 p.m. start time. The temperature in Bainbridge was 90 degrees at 5 p.m.
“But that doesn’t matter,” McClure said. “It doesn’t matter what time we play. When we come out, we have to have the same intensity that we would at any point in time.”
McClure said he hopes to see that level of intensity materialize in next week’s practice.
“I want to see focus and maximum effort,” McClure said. “If we have that, and if we do that, then good things will happen.
