The Ladycats strive for consistency as the 2023-2024 basketball season starts. Through a six-day practice schedule, Ladycats’ head coach Danny Evans looks to see his team improve every day.
“We’ve got expectations,” Evans said. “The girls know our expectation, that expectation is excellence. I want to see excellence every single day and to do that, you have to practice those habits.”
Evans held workouts for the team and took them to tournaments over the summer, and now that the season’s started, he’s seeing the habits of excellence in his players. Junior guard Taliyah Ausgood and senior guard Miyah Williams lead the team, and Evans is looking for a third player to join them.
“Miyah has stepped up a little bit more in the pre-season,” Evans said. “She’s doing pretty good, and we’re trying to get one more to be a leader.”
The Ladycats will be running a newly installed uptempo playstyle this season. Evans said the team is more athletic this year and wants to take advantage of that on defense.
“We’re going to try to be aggressive on defense,” Evans said. “We’ve been preaching defense, defense, defense… we want our defense to be our offense.”
The installation is still in progress, and Evans said he is happy with how the process has gone so far.
“It’s still an adjustment time for them,” Evans said. “If they keep working and going hard like they are now, we should be OK defensively.”
The Ladycats get a chance to put it all together with their season opener against Thomasville on Thursday, Sept. 16. The home game tips off at 6 p.m.
