The Swimcats swam last weekend at a Thomasville meet.
The meet “went well” for the team, according to head coach Eric Conner. The women’s team finished 4th overall, and the men’s team finished 5th.
“Overall, with the placing, it was pretty great,” Conner said. “There’s nothing really to complain about.”
Conner said he has a young team this season. The team is split up between a men’s and women’s team — The men’s team has nine swimmers, and the women’s team has 15.
Of the 26-person team, only three are seniors, all of whom are on the women’s team. Conner said the seniors make up in leadership what they lack in numbers.
“The senior leadership we have is really good,” Conner said. “For instance, we have so many new freshmen trying to learn new things. Our seniors are really quick— especially the ones that have been swimming for a while— are really quick to go help them out.
Freshmen make up almost half of the women’s team. The group is relatively new to swimming, according to Conner, and he said he’s enjoyed having them on the team.
“The thing that you tell them the first week or so is that they’re going to be uncomfortable and to just embrace it,” Conner said. “They really have embraced it… it makes it fun as a coach to show up and have a group that’s eager to go out there
The men’s team has no seniors, but most of the group is returning from last season. Conner said it helps to have swimmers return so he can pick up where they left off from the year before.
Conner said he’s focusing on coaching his team on how to compete this season.
“The biggest thing we’re trying to preach to them now is like trying to learn how to compete correctly,” Conner said. “We’re trying to push, like, it’s ok to get tired in a race, it’s ok to get tired at practice, it’s all part of it.”
The Swimcats compete next at a Thomas County Central meet on Dec. 9.
