Larry Eugene Poitevint was born September 25, 1944, in Camilla, GA, the son of Cecil & Vera Hart Poitevint. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and Americus Tech. Larry worked for forty-plus years as a pipefitter and welder with Plumbers & Steamfitters Union Local 72. He was a member of Southwest Baptist Church.
Larry was a “jack-of-all-trades” with a project of some sort in progress at all times. He never met a stranger and found that after an encounter, he usually added another friend to his list. Larry shared his time and talents without expecting a thing in return…always willing to help anyone with anything. (One thing constantly on his heart was making sure school-age children had the supplies needed to be successful.)
Outdoors was his place. And though he enjoyed most any outdoor activity, hunting and fishing were his favorites. Larry was a pioneer member of the Bainbridge Bass Club. His ramblings along the river and lake, especially with Sonny Kelly, resulted in lots of tall tales and stories to be shared with generations. Evidence of one excursion can be found in the Decatur County Historical & Genealogical Museum, a Native American dugout canoe found south of the Earle May Boat Basin on the Flint River.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Elaine Prescott Poitevint; his daughter, Tracy Poitevint Helms (Kevin); his grandchildren, Cody & Suzanne, Lucas & Breanna, Dallas, and Cash; his great-grandchild, Dalton; his brother, Randy Poitevint (Kathy); his fur babies, Zippy & Suzy; and his special friends, the Griffin family. Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
