Brian McCorkle, who coaches the defensive line for the Bainbridge High School Bearcats football team and who led the Bearcats soccer team to an 11-3 record this past season, has been named Bearcats varsity assistant baseball coach.

He replaces Donnie Lee Coxwell, who resigned to accept the head baseball coaching position at Liberty County High School in his home town of Bristol, Fla.

McCorkle, former head baseball coach at Pelham High School, said he appreciates Bearcats head baseball coach Scott Miller giving him the opportunity to join the baseball program.

“I hate to leave those soccer kids because they are really great kids, but I love baseball,” McCorkle said. “I appreciate coach Miller giving me the opportunity to join his program.”

At the recent Bearcats baseball awards banquet, Miller told the players that he thought McCorkle would be an asset to the program.

“We will miss coach Coxwell because he did an outstanding job, but we are also fortunate to get a coach like coach McCorkle, who has been a baseball head coach,” Miller said.

Before coming to Bainbridge at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, McCorkle coached at Albany High School and Pelham High School. He has coached swimming and track in addition to baseball and soccer.

A 1995 graduate of Cairo High School where he played football under Decatur County School Superintendent Ralph Jones, McCorkle earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Valdosta State University.

McCorkle is married to the former Michelle Pittman of Bainbridge, and they have two sons, William, 5, and Lee, 3.
