Parents and students gathered in the Hutto Elementary cafeteria Tuesday morning as the students put on this year’s Merry Market. The market is both an event and a project for gifted students, which involves students creating their own products themselves and selling them at the market.
According to 5th grade gifted teacher Porsche Chavers, the project serves to teach social studies and economics, as students learn about profit and expenses. “It’s a whole cumulative lesson on profit, expenses, and if the product was successful,” she explained. The event was for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. This year’s market was different from previous years, as students in each grade were also judged by a panel of teachers and members of the school board.
“The best experience is hands-on learning for students,” Chavers said, “and I think this is a great project that provides both.”
