Junior Lady Cougars Kate Poitevint and Sybil Lee were crowned Region 3-2A Doubles Champions and enter the playoffs as a No. 1 seed.
The duo earned the region title at the region tournament Tuesday, April 8. They beat a doubles team from Southwest Georgia Academy 6-2, 6-0 for the crown. Lady Cougars’ head coach, Rhonda Wells, said the win was another step in their effort to win the state championship for the second year in a row.
“They are clicking along nicely together,” Wells said. “I feel like it’s going to be a repeat.”
The two won the state championship last year and have led a dominant campaign on their way to another. Wells said their success comes from a strong shared chemistry and commitment to their craft.
“They just work well together,” Wells said. “Sybil’s really developed at the net, and Kate’s serve is rocking… they’re very dedicated. They put in the work, and they’re seeing the results.”
Lee and Poitevint have played tennis since a young age and have been taking supplemental tennis lessons for the past two years. Wells said their experience and skill will make it hard for anyone to beat them in the state tournament.
“To me, they seem to be head and shoulders above any doubles team they play,” Wells said. “I feel like they’re going to [win the state championship] again.”
They get their shot at a two-peat next week at the state tournament. The two-day event will run from Monday, April 15, to Tuesday, April 16, with the championship match played on Tuesday.
