As the school year winds down, Bainbridge Middle School students got a special lesson in decomposition last Thursday from some local experts. Tammy Nowell, with Southwest Georgia Youth Science and Technology Center, along with Abbey Smith from Danimer Scientific, discussed the various factors of decomposition with students. Smith had also brought several samples of Danimer’s various biodegradable plastic products, and showed students a video of how quickly their products degrade in comparison to traditional plastics.
At the conclusion of the presentation, the pair presented the class with both an outdoor tumbling composter, as well as a classroom observational composter.
While this was the two organization’s first time presenting together, this was not the first time Danimer has visited schools to make presentations, having previously visited Spring Creek Charter Academy.
Unfortunately, this year’s class won’t get to see the composter in action before the school year ends. Next year’s students will be able to compare the differences in the decomposition of Danimer’s products.
