Aspiring future Bainbridge High School Bearcats ranging in age from 9 to 14 were at Bearcat Field Monday and Tuesday learning the arts of pitching and catching from head coach Scott Miller, his staff and players.

They were attending the 10th annual Future Bearcat Summer Baseball pitching and catching camp.

Camp directors Miller and Bearcats junior varsity coach Kevin Bearden were assisted in camp instruction by Bearcat players.

Miller, who coached the Marianna, Fla., High School Bulldogs to the Florida State Class 3A championship on 1999 and played college baseball at Stetson University, said the camp had a very special purpose.

“Whether we are teaching pitching, catching or hitting, we want the youngsters to get exposed to the fundamentals of the game,” he said. “We also want them to get to know our players who are role models to them.”

Bearden played college baseball at Tallahassee Community College and Western Kentucky University and coached one season at Logan High School in Russellville, Ky., before coming to Bainbridge.

Also helping with the camp is new varsity assistant coach Brian McCorkle, former head baseball coach at Pelham High School.

“With our hitting and catching camp, we just want to teach the kids the fundamentals needed to execute the two positions well,” Miller said.

“In the pitching portion, we teach them the proper way to toe the rubber, wind up, stretch and deliver, and in the catching portion, we teach them the proper way to hold their glove, give the sign and get in position to throw on a steal attempt,” Miller said.

“We also want the kids to have some fun while learning to love the game of baseball.”
