Harold Stanley Coppinger was born November 22, 1929, in Attapulgus, GA, the son of E.H “Cowboy” & Mae Clarke Coppinger. He was a graduate of Bainbridge High School and attended GA Tech. Harold married Gloria Powell in 1948, and they made their home in Bainbridge. He was a deacon and one of the longest running members of First Baptist Church. Harold would have celebrated the 81st anniversary of his baptism on July 4, 2024.
Harold was a “Jack of all trades”. He was talented in the machine shop and served customers for decades at Bainbridge Machine Company. In fact, long after his retirement, the calls continued, and Harold provided ideas and solutions.
His love for the outdoors included boating, fishing, and gardening. He grew all types of fruit, citrus, and even had grape vines. The best part for Harold was sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends.
Harold cut the rug at most any opportunity and especially enjoyed western style square dancing. He collected baseball caps, and certainly gave THEM a debonair look as part of his ensemble. Family was the cornerstone in Harold’s life. He lived his testimony, loved his neighbor, and provided a Godly example of what it means to serve.
Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Gloria Powell Coppinger; his daughter, Barbara C. Santoro of St. Louis, MO; his grandchildren, Rebecca (Peter) and Claire (Colin); his great-grandchildren, Gwen, Will, and Elliot; and his close friend, Tim Sims. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Jeanette “Jo” Coppinger, and his brother, Lowell Coppinger.
