Six-to-14-year-old youngsters learned the finer points of hitting, fielding and good defensive play from Bainbridge High School coaches and current and former players this week.

They were taking part in the 12th annual Future Bearcat Summer Baseball Fundamental Camp on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Bearcat Diamonds.

Bainbridge High School Bearcats varsity assistant Coach Brian McCorkle and Bearcats junior varsity coach Kevin Bearden schooled first basemen on  proper fielding stance, getting the tag down when taking a pickoff throw from the pitcher and how to make a proper feed from the shortstop to the second baseman when starting a double play.

Bearcats All-Region 1AAAA infielder Beau Parker, senior second baseman with the Georgia Southwestern University Hurricanes in Americus, was working with the infielders.

Bearcats head baseball coach Scott Miller points out that the Fundamental Camp and the upcoming pitcher and catcher camp are all about baseball excitement.

“We want youngsters in our camps to get excited about baseball, have some fun, and get to know our Bearcat coaches,” Coach Miller said.

The upcoming pitcher and catcher camp is for 9-to-14-year-olds and it will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, June 6 and 7.

The pitchers will be schooled on the proper form and balance when throwing from the windup and the stretch.

Camp cost is $50. Since pre-registration ended on May 20, registrations received after that are subject to a $10 late fee.
